Call for Applications l New Frontiers

For its 2025 edition, the ZOOM Photo Festival is launching a call for presentation of photographic reports on the theme of New Frontiers.

A place for sharing and exchange between the Quebec public, the media and photographers from all around the world, ZOOM organizes these meetings around twenty exhibitions brought together on the theme of multiple new borders created, modified or eliminated in the tumult of our radical era.

This call for proposals is limitless in its physical, conceptual or symbolic territories, and is driven by our certainty that in the cognitive cacophony, into which the dominant media discourses plunge us, photojournalism is invested with a primordial responsibility: that of an authentic testimony, seen, felt and affirmed as a means of knowledge and intelligence in the world.

A sensitive, universal theme

The theme of our 15th edition, independence, refers to a quest for recognition and mastery of an identity, a way of life, values or beliefs. It calls for the expression of both individuals and entire communities.

Exceptional photo essays from around the world document these places of autonomy and demand, whether related to culture, the body, language, territory or freedom of expression.

Guest curator Adrienne Surprenant defines her proposed theme as follows: “It’s a subject that touches us all. It’s about enjoying autonomy from someone or something. Sometimes, it’s a broken hope. It’s a breath of fresh air that makes us want to fight, create and build.

Come and discover these struggles on every continent at the 15th Zoom Photo Festival Saguenay!

A theme that affects the whole planet
It’s commonplace to say that biodiversity is on the brink of the sixth extinction, that oceans,
forests and soils are under threat. Every day, the conditions of habitability are shrinking. The living world – including the mineral, plant, animal and human worlds – has reached a breaking point,
with domino consequences that could well spiral out of control..

We may have the power to destroy ecosystems and their living beings, but we depend on them to eat, heal, marvel and learn…

The living world in all its states, is about (re)discovering all its forms, its intrinsic values,
its torments and its beauties.

The living world in all its states means equitable cohabitation with other living things,
a transformation of modes of domination and exploitation.

The living world in all its states means complex exchanges between all living beings,
their environments and their communities.

The living world in all its states is the human being confronted with current social, economic
and political issues, such as climate change, the migration of peoples and the relationship between indigenous peoples and Mother Earth.

Photography’s contribution to this collective reflection on the living is undeniable.
We look forward to seeing you all in Saguenay for the 14th edition of the Zoom Photo Festival.

Call for applications – 2023

THE LIVING IN ALL ITS FORMS

It is commonplace to say that biodiversity is close to the sixth extinction, that the oceans, forests and soils are threatened! Every day, living conditions are getting worse! So that the living – associating the mineral, vegetable, animal and human world – has reached a breaking point whose domino consequences risk being uncontrollable.

Humans certainly have the power to destroy ecosystems and their living beings, but they depend on them to eat, heal, marvel, learn…

The living in all its forms is to (re)know them, its intrinsic values, its pangs and its beauties.

The living in all its forms are relations of equitable cohabitation with other living beings, a transformation of modes of domination and exploitation.

The living in all its forms are complex exchanges between all living beings, their environments and their communities.

The living in all its forms is the human face of current social, economic and political issues including climate change, the migration of peoples, the relationship of indigenous peoples with “Mother Earth”…  (Christiane Gagnon, 2023)

The contribution of photography to this collective reflection on the living is undeniable.
