Carré Rouge

Photographer : Jacques Nadeau

Location : Zone portuaire de Chicoutimi

Few news photographers supply daily current affairs images that stand out like those of Jacques Nadeau.  Newspapers that appreciate the finesse of his work are even rarer.  As a reader, we develop a taste for quality.

During the student protests in Quebec known as the ‘Printemps Érable’, Nadeau didn’t wait for the situation to degenerate before capturing the inventiveness of the protesters.  He was there for the audacious « maNUfestations» a nude protest; he was there for the ‘burial of universally accessible education’, the ‘Rite of spring’ concert, the first rumblings of demonstrations, and so on.

A photo that reflects a frank account of current affairs as seen by the photographer and us, tells a complete story.  The image can stand alone in a book or, better yet, within the frame of an exhibit.

The Fédération professionnelle des journalistes du Québec (FPJQ) and its Photo committee are proud to present the 2012 Québec Press Photos, an exhibition of the finalists for the Antoine-Desilets Award, which commemorates the best press photos of the year from Québec. The Antoine-Desilets Award began in 2005 to recognize the high quality of photographic production in Québec and the contribution of press photographs for public information.

The photos are divided into five categories: Sports, News, Daily life, Photojournalism and Portrait. All the photos have been published or commissioned by a media company. The award bears the name, of he who is known as “father” of Québec press photographs, Antoine Desolets, photographer for La Presse from 1960 to 1980. This award is also a tribute to his achievements.

Low Tide – Chaos in Japan

Photographer : Denis Rouvre

Location : La Pulperie de Chicoutimi – Musée régional

See, experience, attempt to understand, educate: this was Denis Rouvre’s project when he went on two occasions, without preconceived notions and an open mind, to the Tohoku region in Japan, which was devastated by the tsunami of March 11th, 2011.

While travelling through the zones that were devastated by nature’s blind fury and abandoned by its residents, the first thing he experienced was the silence. Then he met the survivors, photographed them, and recorded their stories. He has given a face and voice to those that live in prefabricated homes and wait patiently for a better life.

Denis Rouvre’s images, both portraits and landscapes alike, reflect a fraction of time when something has shifted and remains suspended in time. They are not meant to explain or demonstrate anything. Refusing to use sentimentality, the images record, with a sobering sharpness, the tracks of devastation that hint at the fractures within an entire society.

Bernard Brault « London Olympics »

Photographer : Bernard Brault

Location : Place du Royaume

he president of the international Olympic committee, Jacques Rogge, praised the London Olympics as joyous and glorious. As for myself, following the coverage of my 10th Olympic games since 1994, I had once again an extraordinary experience.

The organization and the sites were held to the highest British standards. I covered over 41 different activities, shooting my Nikon D4 over 47,000 times ! It was the most photos that I’ve taken personally during an event. I had once again the opportunity to witness Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps and seen performances by hundreds of athletes.

Here are some images of the Games…

Anthropographia « Human rights »

Location : Hall de la salle François Brassard CEGEP de Jonquière, Pavillon Gérard-Arquin

During the last weekend of July 2012, Tina Ahrens, co-founder of emphasis, James Estrin, founder of the New York Times lens blog and Matthieu Rytz, founder of AnthropoGraphia reviewed the submissions sent in by an impressive group of candidates. This team carefully narrowed down the entries to 12 photo-essays and 6 multimedia projects. From these, an outstanding photo-essay and a superlative multimedia project were chosen to receive this year’s award. Two honorary mentions were also selected.

AnthropoGraphia is committed to promoting human rights throughout the world, through visual storytelling of the highest caliber. We recognize the power of photography to raise awareness, and we reject distinctions between photojournalism and the arts, which allows for a variety of approaches in documentary representation.

We seek to raise awareness of human rights issues, which the traditional media all too often marginalize. We also strive to encourage non-Western and emerging photographers by promoting them alongside the world’s most renowned photographers.

Agence Stock Photo « 25 years of History »

Location : Hangar de la Zone portuaire de Chicoutimi

Agence Stock Photo Exhibition : 25 years of history is presented with a series of twelve photographs which have come into the collectives’ path and bear witness to a quarter of a century of reporting where the great social movements and simple everyday moments coexist.

Haiti, a photographer’s paradise, begins the journey with the first post-Duvalier elections in 1987 and remains in the focus of the collective beyond the earthquake of 2010. Attention turns toward Québec media highlights, especially the 1990 Oka crisis, the 1993 Stanley Cup riots, the 1995 referendum and the Summit of the Americas in 2001. The Festival Western de St-Tite gay village transformists show off their local colors, through the rave phenomena.

From abroad, images can transport our reality to that of a 20 year old in Moscow or to a transvestite ritual in India. The reports show amongst others, evidence of oil pollution in Kuwait, desertification in China and the recent elections in Burma. This timetable from 1987 to 2012 illustrates key events that have engraved history and ends with coverage of the events from “Printemps érable.”
